MAKE IT MESA: Downtown Dining
Palate-Pleasing Options Are Aplenty Following the Light Rail To Mesa
Since Light Rail service began almost three years ago, restaurants and café’s have come to life along Main Street. More and more mainstays have been cropping up and quickly gaining traction with downtown dining loyalists sharing reviews on the must-eats up and down the street.
Locals have flocked to Nunthaporn Thai and turned this quaint restaurant into a hopping hotspot, especially for the pre-show crowd catching a performance at the Mesa Arts Center just steps away.
De La Cruz Bistro, anchoring the corner at Center and Main Street, has become the location of choice for après-show cocktails, and small bites paired with live entertainment. And the choices don’t stop there. Urban Picnic opened their doors to record crowds wanting a quick grab-n-go lunch spot. Casual diners come early to catch up and plug in at one of the few tables inside. The swanky and stark white décor complete with ants marching along the wall make this one of Mesa’s hipster hangouts.
Main Street mainstays like Mango’s Mexican Café always pack a crowd and please the masses. The fresh fish tacos are piled high with all the proper trimmings – avocado, lime, and cabbage. But the choices reach well beyond savory fare. Seeking out the grape stuff is also worth the trek into downtown Mesa with more and more establishments showcasing Arizona wines. Sun Devil Liquors Cellar & Pub, just off Country Club Drive, is a hidden gem that features weekly wine and beer tastings, and a newly-renovated lounge. Local wineries showcase their latest blends here and you can easily go home with several bottles from Pillsbury Wine Company, Caduceus Cellars, Arizona Stronghold Vineyards and Page Springs Cellars to name a few. Getting praise is il Vinaio. This downtown Mesa favorite boasts an over-the-top wine list. The well-stocked wine bar at il Vinaio (which means “wine merchant” in Italian) is the place for themed dinners year-round paired with their boutique wines and micro-brews.
Ending the meal on a sweet note is a must and visitors will want to save room for the plate-sized cookies from Sweet Cakes Café. This treasured family-run business was featured on TLC’s “Best Food Ever” in their Bodacious Bakeries episode. Lovers of all things sweet and gooey will not want to pass up on the signature sugar cookie featuring a half-inch thick layer of homemade vanilla frosting or the five-layer brownie. It’s a valley favorite.
Downtown Mesa dining is easy for Light Rail riders. From Sycamore Station, hop aboard the Downtown Buzz to get easy access to the charming districts that jet out from Main Street. As Valley Metro makes plans to extend Light Rail service along Main Street (completion date expected in late 2015), Downtown Mesa is anticipating even more outstanding dining spots worth the ride on the rail. For information on dining in Mesa, visit us online at www.VisitMesa.com, or visit the Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau at 120 N. Center in Downtown Mesa.
Fill Your Plate with Arizona Agriculture!
By 2050, almost 75% of the world’s population will live in cities. And most of us, including Arizonans, are 3 to 4 generations removed from the farm and ranch. As a result we have no contact with the source of our food other than eating it. Arizona Farm Bureau realizes the significant importance of knowing where our food comes from, including the excitement of meeting a modern-day farmer growing our food.
So, we created Fill Your Plate, an online, searchable database of Arizona farmers and ranchers that can sell directly to you and me! It also gives you an online way to meet local farmers and ranchers.
Arizona Farm Bureau’s Fill Your Plate helps form a unique relationship a common bond between Arizona farmers and ranchers and Arizonans like you. In fact, it’s one way we’re building community! Fill Your Plate provides chefs and Arizonans with an opportunity to find and purchase locally-grown food and along the way make friends with Farmer John, Bill and Betty.
On the site, you’ll have all sorts of opportunities to engage beyond just the searchable database. You can post a question on our Farmer Forum, search for recipes, read what celebrities are saying about Arizona’s farmers and ranchers and much more! We even provide information about how food prices are trending and nutritious tidbits that highlight Arizona fruits, vegetables and meat products. Plus, we post 3 articles a week on the Fill Your Plate blog! It’s a cornucopia of insights such that once you’ve begun to use the site your mouth will water in anticipation of biting into a fresh-picked Arizona apple or barbequing some of Arizona’s famous and tasty beef.
Where to Buy Arizona Local
So, how can you purchase more products directly from Arizona Farmers and Ranchers?
Maximize Your Food Shopping Experience at the Grocery Store
Our Fill Your Plate fans get inspired by our regular blog articles about food and nutrition. We also regularly post recipes. They also gather ideas about cooking and food ingredients.
As a result, Arizona Farm Bureau has spent lots of time asking Farm Bureau members how to maximize on their food shopping experiences. Here are some of the things they’ve come up with.
A good produce expert can tell you how quickly the store’s product gets from the field to the produce case. For example, Bashas’ works with its local producers to get product delivered in four hours or less to the company’s distribution centers. That way, quality produce is shipped to the stores that same evening – at peak freshness.
Encourage kids to try new fruits and vegetables, and use their senses to discover the best items. Smell, touch (gently) and taste. If they pick it out, they’ll at least try it, and they become in tune with their own food tastes.
Your local grocery store can guarantee quality and freshness if they’re dedicated to those high standards of fresh, healthy and affordable produce. With Arizona’s competitive grocery market, your odds are very good.
“We’re bringing you some of the best produce right here from Yuma,” says John Boelts, large-scale Yuma produce grower who is in leadership on the Yuma County Farm Bureau and on the board of the Yuma Fresh Vegetable Association. “We’re growing the quality produce consumers want and making it available at prices they can afford.
Boelts, who grows as many as 40 to 60 varieties of produce in any given season, also suggests you make a habit of talking to store produce managers. “You’ll learn so much more about what Arizona farmers and ranchers are growing for you.”
Check out Fill Your Plate frequently as we regularly add new Arizona farmers and ranchers to the site, upload new producer recipes, have various celebrities talking about our great products and much more!

Where to Buy Arizona Local
So, how can you purchase more products directly from Arizona Farmers and Ranchers?
- Source for farmers and ranchers on www.fillyourplate.org (by product and location)
- Visit a local farmers market
- Ask your local grocery store manager what foods in the store are local (often the produce manager can tell you where he obtained local fruits and vegetables)
- Know that 55% of the beef found at the meat counter comes from Arizona ranches and feedlots
- Buy Hickman’s eggs: they’re produced by an Arizona family, Hickman’s Family Farms
- Buy milk: know that 98% of your fresh milk comes from Arizona dairies!
- Seek out the produce manager in the store. Ask, “What’s new.” Ask, “What’s local.” Do they have recommended recipes for certain items? Ask them how quickly local produce gets from field to the produce case. Also, ask, “What is good today or special today?”
A good produce expert can tell you how quickly the store’s product gets from the field to the produce case. For example, Bashas’ works with its local producers to get product delivered in four hours or less to the company’s distribution centers. That way, quality produce is shipped to the stores that same evening – at peak freshness.
- Use the produce aisle as a place to plan your meal. Get inspired. Look for something you haven’t cooked in a while. Ask for recipes for produce items that you’re unfamiliar with or haven’t prepared before. See someone picking up an item you’ve never tried before? Ask them or the produce manager to give you some ideas on how to use the product. Or, trust your intuition and take it home, taste it raw, steam, roast, and grill or stir-fry whatever is in season. This is one of the keys to creative cooking.
- Build your shopping list according to your breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Obviously, sticking to your shopping list keeps your food budget on target. If you can’t find a particular item on your list, be sure to ask a produce manager who can help you locate the item or find a great substitution.
- Get the kids involved. Let them pick out whatever produce they want and will eat. It’s a great way to make them responsible rather than you for eating fruits and vegetables. See our video on this.
Encourage kids to try new fruits and vegetables, and use their senses to discover the best items. Smell, touch (gently) and taste. If they pick it out, they’ll at least try it, and they become in tune with their own food tastes.
- If you have questions, never be afraid to ask. “Part of our job is to know fruits and vegetables,” said Jack Armstrong, an expert Produce Buyer who’s been with Bashas’ Family of Stores for more than 40 years, referring to a produce expert’s role in the store. “No question is stupid. Questions are for learning. If a produce manager doesn’t know the answer, he’ll find the answer.”
