Downtown Mesa is just bursting at the seams with quaintness; Sweet Cakes Café is no exception to the rule. Exit the light rail at Sycamore and Main and hop on the Link bus, a new feature from Valley Metro that shoots straight down Main Street, all the way to Superstition Springs Mall. Sweet Cakes is only a few steps away from the stop at Center Street, and well worth the quick walk. Be it a tasty afternoon snack or a bistro style lunch you crave, sweet cakes will have it.
Walking in the door it is impossible to ignore the wall of cookies piled high in baskets behind the front counter. Everything in the house is made from scratch; even the sandwich bread is fresh from the oven. Practice restraint and save the best for last, the Boars Head sandwiches and fresh soup are worth a try. Sweet Cakes is often packed during lunch hours with locals, a testament to their excellent food; it is also a great spot to stop before catching a performance at the Mesa Arts Center, just a block down the street. When desert time comes around indulge in the Seven Layer Brownie, also known as the best thing to eat on Main Street. Gooey decadent devil’s food cake brownies layered with homemade cream cheese frosting. The cookies are also out of this world and as big as your head. However, here is a warning these fore mentioned treats are not diet friendly. In fact, most of the items in Sweet Cakes are not going to be on the Atkins, or the South Beach diet. Nevertheless, who cares, it’s so good it can’t be wrong, right?
