Light Rail Stop: Camelback and Central
By Amy Warford
Right after the Holidays, you may be thinking to yourself, I need a vacation, a Hawaiian vacation. However, in an economy such as this, thinking about spending money on a vacation or taking time off to go on a vacation feels a little bit like a shark attack. It’s a vicious cycle. Fret not readers, The Light Rail Connect Magazine has the cure for what ails you. Introducing, Hula’s Modern Tiki. Chilling on the northwest corner of Highland and Central, just a block south of Camelback road, is the laid-back island getaway you have been dreaming of. Just a short walk from Central and Camelback Light Rail stop will transport you into an island oasis, not complete with ocean breezes but, there might be an App for that.
Trade in your PBJ brown bag for fish tacos, or pull a Jimmy Buffet and choose from one of the many tempting delights on the drink menu as a liquid lunch. We suggest doing so on your day off, as one Mai Tai leads to two Mai Tai’s which at some points leads to more. Hula’s has something for everyone at the table, from fresh crisp salads if you are a serial “New Year’s Resolution: Loose ten pounds” kind of person, to a number of items for the committed carnivore of the group. Lunch, Dinner, and weekend Brunch will have you returning repeatedly to try every last morsel. For those island transplants, there is even SPAM. A traditional Hawaiian dish us mainlanders might not grasp although, some claim a miracle worker when it comes to hangovers.
If you are heading to Hula’s for a Tom Cruise lookalike spinning and tossing a tin within an inch of his life behind the bar, keep on keepin on. But, if you are looking for a truly unique dining experience with an upscale twist on traditional island fare than you have met your match. Hula’s Modern Tiki is an excellent example of the new life springing up in Downtown Phoenix. Refreshing for you and for your wallet with ways to save green and be charitable everyday: Tiki Happy Hour from 3:30 to 6 PM Monday thru Friday offering $5 tropical cocktails and five appetizers for $5. Following Hula’s on facebook and twitter will get you the word of the day every Tuesday rendering secret specials only Hula’s closest friends get. If that was not enough, bring your philanthropic friends in on Mahalo Monday and 10% of the gross proceeds from that day will go to a local charity. Food tastes better when it is doing good things.
