Hob Nobs certainly stands out on the corner of Third Avenue and McDowell in downtown Phoenix with its green rooftop and English countryside charm, a far cry from adobe style buildings chock full of little to no personality. If you are at all like me, charisma goes a long way in my book. For the record, Hob Nobs coffee, staff, and food almost darn near had me saying, “I do”. Three things that make a coffee house a coffee house are good vibes, get you going drinks, and tasty treats; Hob Nobs did not disappoint on any of the above.
To begin with as usual Hob Nobs is only a short ten or so minute walk for the Light Rail station at McDowell and Central, just long enough to enjoy the sunshine before your flip flops start to melt. Once inside you will have an immediate appreciation for the space, it is as if Joey, Rachel, and Ross maybe sitting in the middle of the room with some of their Friends. HN is doing a great job of representing local talent by displaying various home- grown artists of all genres, from photography to oil paintings and the occasional large installation there is plenty to look at while you sip your latte. Speaking of which, Hob Nobs is not messing around when it comes to caffeinated beverages, the baristas here are so friendly and they tend to have a memory of circus elephant (because, they never forget). Let us be honest a mocha is a mocha but it tastes better when you know the $3.50 is going back into your own community. The coffee shop trifecta rounds out with a key player, the grub. The HN’s menu is displayed on giant chalkboards (see: charming), and everything looks so delish it is hard to stay inside the dotted lines. The veggie sandwich is not to be missed by any legume lovers out there but The Carver and Vito’s Favorite are unforgettable. Your taste buds will love you. Don’t forget dessert, as if that were possible, ha. Mouthwatering, diet destroyers hit the front lines displayed in a pretty glass case so you can’t stick your fingers in anything for a little taste test. Go with the cinnamon roll, or the cookies. You know what; go with anything… or all of it. Just, go.
As if all this isn’t enough pile on free Wi-Fi, endless seating options, quiet corners for study sessions, late night hours on the weekends, and live music on Friday and Saturday nights and you too will be ready to make a serious commitment to Hob Nobs.
